How to pay your American Express card in Mexico with digital dollars

Paying an American Express card in Mexico almost always starts in the same place, a bank account in pesos. Since American Express has no physical branches to take payments, everything goes through digital channels or partner banks and stores, and nearly all of them assume the money is already in pesos. For a growing number of people in Mexico that is no longer the case. Today you can pay your Amex directly with digital dollars from the Orbi app, without converting first or going through a bank.

Why pay with digital dollars?

We see it every day at Orbi. Freelancers who bill clients abroad, people who receive money from family outside the country and savers who prefer to keep part of their wealth in dollars now hold that money in digital dollars. For them, paying the card meant a small chain of steps nobody enjoys. You had to convert, wait for the pesos to reach the bank and only then pay. Each step is simple on its own, but together they become a chore right in the week of the statement date, and they push you to convert more than needed so you don’t fall short, or to keep pesos parked in another account just in case, which is exactly what saving in dollars was meant to avoid.

How to pay American Express from Orbi

The payment is made from the Marketplace in the app. You choose American Express, enter your card number and the amount you want to cover, and confirm. The payment comes out of your digital dollar balance in a single step. Behind the scenes, you sell Orbi the digital dollars needed and Orbi makes the payment to American Express on your behalf, without the money having to pass through a peso account first. Your balance stays in dollars until the moment you actually use it, and the payment is recorded in your history inside the app.

Can I pay other cards besides Amex?

Yes. The Orbi Marketplace lets you pay credit cards from different banks and issuers, such as Konfío, as well as bills and top-ups. Almost nobody has just one card, and it’s common to combine the one from the bank where your paycheck lands with another for travel or for your own business expenses. Being able to handle every due date from the same place your money arrives saves you from converting and transferring each time one comes up.

What to keep in mind when paying your Amex

Paying with digital dollars doesn’t change the basic rules of a card. It’s best to pay a few days ahead of the due date, because each issuer has its own timing to post payments and a delay triggers interest and fees. It’s also worth knowing what type of card you have, since at American Express credit cards have a minimum payment, while charge cards require paying the full balance. And it’s good practice to keep the receipt for every payment.

Holding money in dollars used to be a savings decision, something you put away and rarely touched. When that same balance can pay your American Express, it becomes a way to live with it, in the currency you chose to hold.

Digital dollars are virtual assets subject to the LFPIORPI, not legal tender or bank deposits. American Express and Konfío are registered trademarks of their respective owners.
